I see
Dil Dil Pakistan on PTV in the morning. It was the most amazing thing in the
world that I have heard and seen at age 4.
I start
my schooling from St. Paul’s English High.
I
was 6 years old when I got hold of my elder sister’s toy keyboard and
since then I wanted to be a musician.
I
continue playing that old keyboard figuring out Indian tunes and few Pakistani
numbers.
I see a Sitar player performing on PTV2 daytime. I tell myself that I would
invent a form of music that would amalgamate sitar with a guitar (fusion music,
as we know it today).
I
beg my parents to get me a music teacher and buy me a keyboard. Nothing happens.
I
beg my parents for a more expensive item, a cycle and I get that!
I
forget about music and I become a game freak (Sega/Nintendo)
I
want to be Salman Ahmed of Junoon.
I’m a Junaid Jamshed fan.
I beg my parents to buy me a guitar. Nothing happens again.
I become
a cricket watching freak and wanted to do nothing else but play cricket.
Pakistan
badly loses in the World cup final.
I start saving money for a guitar.
My family moves from North to a Southern part of Karachi.
I
roam around Saddar for an hour and finally end up in a music store where I
buy a guitar for 2000/-. It was probably the cheapest one in the entire shop.
I manage to get the drawing room music system in my room and become an addicted
listener to Budha Bar albums and Bryan Adams discography.
I get myself admitted in Defence Authority college for intermediate education.
I
join a guitar institute in Defence only for a month as I couldn’t afford
it further and I hated the western Do Re Me Fa So Le De.
I flunk in 2 papers in my 1st year exams.
I perform at a local computer institute and almost get “booed”
off stage.
I
attempt 8 papers in my intermediate exam and clear them all.
I get in College of Business Management to start off my BBA only to let go
my art side as it sounded like a bad deal to my family.
In CBM, I meet Samra Khan for the first time and become good friends with
Jaffer Ali Zaidi.
I
fail to score above 1.0 GPA in the first semester.
I join Kaavish.
I
leave Kaavish.
I go into seclusion and become an obsessed documentary fan. Politics, religious
crisis around the world captivate my attention.
Along
with M Ahmed (Drums) and Yousuf Khan (vocals), I (vocals, guitar) form my
own grunge rock band “KYUN?” It was designed to operate as a rebel
voice in the youth questioning the authorities that were responsible for peace.
It was an Idea much like Rage against the Machine in the US.
I join Naught (A Perfect Circle cover band) and Wreckage (Korn cover band)
as a bassist. Through out the year, we perform at various auditoriums thus,
becoming a part of the infamous rock underground scene of Karachi.
I setup a home studio to record “KYUN?” album with help from Yousuf.
We work 16-20 hours a day working in different jobs to collect money.
I become more rebellious than ever growing my hair long enough to indirectly
communicate my dissociation from the society, isolating myself within the
room for days to record my songs to launch them on the web.
I
quit doing underground gigs.
I become keenly interested in music production.
I plan to launch KYUN?’s 1st song called “Azaan-e-Azad”,
an instrumental depicting the history of Pakistan and band’s support
to General Musharaf’s regime. Sadly, it never happened.
I become extremely patriotic and spiritual.
I become a video production enthusiast.
I
make the first incomplete instrumental version of the song “Wake up”.
“KYUN?” decides to discontinue.
I graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing.
I share the instrumental version with Samra Khan and record “Wake up”,
“Orange” and “Awaz (The Last Radiowave)” followed
with “Black coffee” with Jaffer Ali Zaidi.
I join a local Television network as an associate director.
I
get tired of being depressed and I say “F*ck it! Let’s have fun”.
Further songs get recorded with an addition of Nida Khurram to my album family.
I upgrade my studio equipment.
I get a haircut.
I pre-launch my website and my first song on the internet and radio.
You download my song!
Zara Madani joins in
as the last voice of the album.
I finish the biggest
project of my Television career namely "OYE-Banana".
I launch my second
song "Raat Bazaar".
Last songs of
the album get recorded.
I plan to get
enrolled for a masters degree in business education.
Its June and Im
expecting a promotion at my workplace!
